Sonoma Raceway was another heartbreaker for AJ Allmendinger, who led four laps (19-22) in his No. 47 Kroger ClickList Chevrolet before noticing he had low voltage around lap 71. The team pitted the car multiple times to change the battery, disconnect the alternator and try to diagnose the root of the problem. In the end Allmendinger was credited with a 35th-place finish.
“I don’t know what happened there,” Allmendinger said “I just noticed, during what was going to be our final pit stop, I kind of looked down and just noticed the battery starting to die. From there, that was it --shutting all the switches off and everything wasn’t going to work.
“I’m also mad at myself for not driving very well,” Allmendinger continued. “The car was pretty good. That first stint was good. The No. 78 (Martin Truex Jr.) was pretty good too, but I thought we were going to be okay. I just didn’t drive very well and just bad luck again.”
“We ran good and AJ drove his butt off” crew chief and competition director Ernie Cope said. “The crew had great stops. We had an issue and we’re going to get to the bottom of what it was and fix whatever issues there are. We beat ourselves. We had a car good enough to contend for a win. We will figure out what it is.”
