AJ Allmendinger completed all 200 laps of the Daytona 500 to finish 21st at Daytona International Speedway with his No. 47 Kroger/SCOTT Products Chevrolet SS on Sunday afternoon.
“Our No. 47 Kroger/SCOTT Products Chevrolet SS was pretty good thanks to Randall (Burnett) and my guys that kept tuning on it,” Allmendinger said. “There was just nowhere to go out there. I’d either go and no one would go with me or I’d go and then there would be nowhere to go. It just seemed like every time I had a good run on the bottom, no one would go with me. We were just mired in traffic back there. I can’t say enough about how hard my guys worked. They picked me up. The way I look at it is that it could be worse. We could have a worse finish. At least, we have the car in one piece and we can build on this.
"I just want to really thank all of our sponsors, for their support and friendship," Allmendinger said. "It was really great seeing everyone at the Kroger dinner/brunch and inside the track. I hope everyone had a great time. I just wished we could have had a better finish. We'll move on to Atlanta (Motor Speedway)."
“It’s been a long weekend, but we got out of Daytona with the No. 47 Kroger/SCOTT Products Chevy in one piece, with a 21st-place finish and we didn’t bury ourselves in points,” crew chief Randall Burnett said. “We got a solid day out of it and AJ did a good job all day long. I made a couple rookie mistakes calling the race. We had just a couple instances where we were a little bit behind the eight ball, but we will get it all fixed up. Of course, the crew was just solid all week. They prepared the back-up car great. We didn’t have any problems and the car drove well. We will build on this and we have a bunch of ideas that we will put together for Talladega Superspeedway later in the season. Now that we have Daytona behind us, we can go to Atlanta and apply the stuff we learned this winter and build on that.”
“I’m proud of the team and I’m proud of AJ,” team owner Tad Geschickter said. “We didn’t unload where we wanted to a week-and-a-half ago, but no one ever gave up. They just kept digging. I’m proud of the guys. We made the first car fast and then we had some unfortunate luck. We should have started in the top-10 for the Daytona 500, but we had to start in the back. AJ did a masterful job of taking care of the equipment. It was just circumstances because we had a solid car. It was a good start to the season and we will move on. This kind of racing, you just have to have a little help when it is time to go. He made some holes and did a good job.”
