Event: Sprint Showdown
Date/Time: Saturday, May 21st, 11 AM ET
AJ Allmendinger and the No. 47 Uwharrie Bank Chevrolet SS team finished 10th in the first Sprint Showdown 20-lap segment, third in the 20-lap second segment and fifth in the final 10-lap segment at Charlotte Motor Speedway Saturday afternoon. Trevor Bayne, Greg Biffle and Kyle Larson each respectively won a segment to advance to the NASCAR Sprint All-Star event tonight.
“We were really loose, on top of the racetrack and I was kind of surprised by that,” Allmendinger said. “There was just no grip. The positive is that we had the Showdown race to figure that out. It gives us the opportunity to go back to the drawing board for next weekend in preparation of the Coca-Cola 600 and to go in the right direction setup-wise. We got this in so we can know that. We will figure it out and start over.”
“We had an okay race today because we learned quite a bit,” crew chief Randall Burnett said. “We never did get any practice before starting the Showdown due to weather. We started with a little bit of an unknown setup for the race. The car was just too loose for AJ to start with. We had to play strategy to get a chance to win one of those segments. Our strategy worked out okay, but we just couldn’t get the car underneath him to hold onto the spots to transfer in. The guys did a great job on pit road and got us out there. We started second in the final segment. That’s all you can ask for is to just get out there and battle for it, but we know we have to get the car better for him and do better."
