After starting second and leading the field at laps 9-24, 47, 71-72 and lap 88, AJ Allmendinger had to settle for a 14th-place finish in his No. 47 Ralphs/Kingsford Professional Briquets due to an uncontrollable tire violation at lap 88 Sunday afternoon. With 20 laps remaining, Allmendinger restarted 33rd and made a hard charge to salvage a top-15 finish out of the day and stay in the Chase hunt (18th in the drivers point standings, 20 points out of 16th).
“Randall Burnett (crew chief) and all the guys -- Brian Burns, Tony Palmer, all my guys -- they did a great job. We weren’t very good to start on Friday. They worked so hard to get this thing as good as it could be. It was such a strange race. At one point, you think the tires go off and then you find something and manage them again. I thought whatever it was, 25 to go, we were coming. So, in the end, just a bad pit stop and we let the tire get away and got a penalty. That took away our chance to win the race. Overall, I thought our Ralphs/Kingsford Professional Briquets Chevy was pretty good. It was for sure a top three car. We just needed to be up there at the end and we weren’t. It’s racing. You know you are not guaranteed anything until the checkered flag. It is part of life. We win and lose as a team. We have to get our stuff straight if we actually want to be a Chase team and consider ourselves a Chase team. Another fast race car, that is all I can ask for.”
“We struggled on Friday a little bit,” crew chief Randall Burnett said. “We changed a bunch of stuff going into Saturday. We found some good speed in the car and qualified second. We ran up there all day. We had a good shot. There were a lot of green flag runs. We felt like that hurt us at times and helped us at times. A couple runs we were really good on a longer run and then one of them we were bad. We came down pit road and had a violation. It put us behind. AJ did a phenomenal job driving back up through the field to finish 14th. He really saved our day by fighting back for us. We will look at everything and learn from this and go on."
