An untimely caution at Lap 65 while AJ Allmendinger’s No. 47 SCOTT® Products Chevrolet SS was on pit road for service the first time set the tone for JTG Daugherty Racing’s day at Dover International Speedway. Allmendinger finished 21st in the 400-lap event. He qualified 11th and was running 15th before entering pit road and losing his lap when the yellow flag waved for an accident involving Alex Bowman. It was the first of eight cautions for 41 laps. There were 18 lead changes among six drivers and Jimmie Johnson came out on top followed by Brad Keselowski, Matt Kenseth, Clint Bowyer and Denny Hamlin rounding out the top-five.
After race 13, Allmendinger is 20th (337 points) in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver points standing and Matt Kenseth (463 points) is the current points leader.
“It’s tough because we had cautions every time at the wrong time and we got caught a lap down early on because of that,” Allmendinger said. “I thought we had a good car. It was somewhat hard to tell throughout the course of the day because we were on such a different tire strategy, but we thought we were definitely in the ballpark. We could make minor adjustments back and forth. Hopefully, we learned something for the next time we come to Dover. We were decent for sure. Once you get a lap or two down though, you have got to start doing things to try to get it back. Whatever could go wrong, went wrong for us today. It was just bad luck. We got everything we could out of the day. We will learn from it and we’re grateful we have a car to take home in one piece.”
“Everything that could have went wrong, went wrong like AJ stated,” crew chief Brian Burns said. “When you are talking about luck, all the bad luck fell our way as soon as we pitted. The first caution came out and it put us behind right on the first stop and he fought hard all day long with getting off sequence. The next time we come back here we wouldn’t change a thing about the setup because that’s how good we feel about the car we had this weekend. It’s tough we were not able to show it with the results.”
“I’m really proud of how AJ drove today with a lot of adversity,” JTG Daugherty Racing co-owner Tad Geschickter said. “The race went against us early on and we tried to overcome it. He drove his heart out. We had a fast SCOTT® Products Chevrolet SS and I’m really proud of the team. If we keep putting fast cars out there, the race will go our way instead of against us. We tried everything we could because we had top 8 car. We’ll start getting the top-10 finishes we deserve. We just need to focus on the fact that we did have top 8 car. I’m patient and everybody is doing a good job.
“We have a test at Sonoma Raceway this week and I hope it goes well for them and hopefully we’ll also have a fast car at Pocono Raceway,” Geschickter continued. “We will keep digging. I’ve been at Dover where we have had a finish like we did today where we felt awful whereas today we finished 21st and I feel like we have a really good race team. I’m just proud of everybody. The car was fast and if we keep doing what we are doing, the finishes will come. We’ve got the speed now.”
