AJ Allmendinger scored his third top-10 in a row with a tenth-place  finish at Martinsville Speedway in his No. 47 Kroger/Clorox Chevrolet SS Sunday afternoon. The San Jose, Calif.-native was credited with leading laps 357-361 before running out of fuel awaiting NASCAR to open pit road under caution. After Allmendinger coasted into his pit box while pit road was still closed, he was penalized to restart at the tail-end of the field miring him in traffic while the remainder of the race stayed green.

“It was just a good day and that’s our third top-10 finish in a row,” Allmendinger said. “We just missed it a little bit. We couldn’t quite get the No. 47 Kroger/Clorox Chevy to turn right through the exit of the center of the corner to get it pointed. We kind of struggled with the same thing all day. Compared to the spring, I thought we were just a little bit off, but we still had good speed. We ran in the top 10 all day.

“The way that caution played out, I thought we were actually going to be real fortunate and have a shot at a win," Allmendinger said. "Unfortunately, I just ran out of fuel and had to make the decision to try to go right to pit road to make sure we didn’t get stuck on the racetrack,” Allmendinger said. “I’ve never seen a race at Martinsville last 100 laps green. I thought if we could have got a caution there, we could have maybe fought back up to sixth, seventh or eighth. That is kind of where we could run I thought on outright speed.

“Like I said earlier, it’s the third top-10 in a row for us,” Allmendinger said. “I think it’s the first time I’ve ever had three top 10’s in a row.  I think it’s the first time the team has ever had it. Martinsville has always been a good place for us, but it just shows we are getting more speed in the car. A lot of these places that we are going to, it's definitely helping. We’re really looking forward to the last three races. We’ve got brand new cars. Texas Motor Speedway and Phoenix International Raceway are places we have kind of struggled at, but we’re looking forward to going there and trying to improve.”
